Birmingham NEC Trip Last week Mam (Ali Crafts Designs) and I travelled to Birmingham to set up our stall at the The Stitching, Sewing and hobby crafts show at the NEC. Setting up the stand was great fun although we struggled to fit as much stock into the car as we would have liked to take. The show ran for four days and it was so lovely to meet other stall holders, customers and online followers. We even sold out of some patterns! I really can’t wait to do another show in the future.
What I bought I have been wanting to start knitting again (its probably been 20 years since I last knitted!) so I decided to treat myself to some new knitting needles. Luckily the stand next to us sold the most beautiful knitting needles, The Lace Knittery. I chose these pink 4.0mm needles, I got long and short set as I wasn’t sure which I preferred. So far I am finding the short needles really comfortable to use.
I have been wanting to make some wrist warmers as well, so I bought a lovely knitting kit from Home Farm Wensleydales which includes pattern, yarn and buttons. I have made one so far and really enjoying getting into knitting again.
The last item I bought was this cute little snowman cross-stitch kit from Nia Cross Stitch. Again it has been a long time since I have done some cross stitching but I thought this would make a great Christmas decoration.
What I am working on this week I have finished two small crochet projects this week, a doll and a hat. The patterns will be coming soon but here is some sneaky peaks 🙂
Thanks again to everyone who we spoke to over the weekend, we are hoping to book more shows next year.
Last week our order of chunky wool arrived and I couldn’t wait to try it out. We are now stocking Stylecraft Swift Knit Mega in two shades, Ash and Peony…more coming soon.
The next question was what to make, I decided to make a scarf. There are a lot of chunky woollen scarves in the shops at the moment so I thought I would see if I could make one using just one 200g ball.

Hello, hope you are all having a great week and crafting some super projects. We have been preparing for the Stitching, Sewing & Hobbycrafts show at the Birmingham NEC this week. This is the first time I have been to the show and Mam keeps saying its very hard work to set up and run the stand. If you are coming don’t forget to pop along and say hello.
Half term It is half term for us this week, so the boys are off school and we haven’t got much planned at all. George, my eldest son seems to like to spend most of his time at my parent’s house at the moment to get a break from his little brother. It feels like two minutes ago since the summer holidays.
Kevin Blanket Over the weekend I completed my Kevin blanket (funny name really but it was named after a minion as the original blanket is made minion colours 🙂 ). I chose to make mine in the mushroom and sage yarn pack colours as I wanted to show how different the blanket could look in different colours. I did a random colour change as well and made the blanket smaller. I was struggling a bit with the border but Mam talked me through how to make it. I really don’t enjoy stitches where you have to take the hook out of the loop and back in, seems to take me ages but I was really happy with the finished effect and it was worth it.
Christmas Wreath I have also been crocheting a Christmas wreath to match my Christmas tree blanket. I am at the tricky stage of trying to attach the green wrapping to the metal frame and wadding. Then it will be time for more pom poms!
Currently its all stitch markers, wadding and many many ends.
Stylecraft Special DK Starter Pack We have put together a new yarn pack this week, Stylecraft Special Starter pack. We thought this would be great for beginners who were wanting to start building up a yarn stash or anyone wanting to just expand their yarn stash. The pack includes ten balls for £17.50 in these colours…
It has been a while since my last blog update. The last few weeks have been really busy as we are trying to get everything prepared for the Birmingham NEC show in November, also my youngest son has been off school with a nasty cough.
Virus Shawl Progress
Ali and I went to a Virus shawl workshop a couple of weeks ago at Woolabaloo, it was so lovely to enjoy four hours of peaceful crocheting time. I decided to crochet the shawl from the chart pattern rather than the written pattern. Once the chart was explained I found it relatively easy to follow, after the first four rows are done you soon get into the flow of crocheting the shawl.
Is it too early to mention Christmas? The shops seem to be in full Christmas mode already. If you are wanting to make some Christmas crochet items it is always a good idea to get started nice and early. It took me two years to make a Christmas blanket once, at least I have it ready to use this year 🙂
Christmas Printed patterns (if you prefer PDF downloads you can find them on Ali Crafts Designs)
Christmas Tree Blanket The pattern is also now available for the Christmas Tree blanket or if you prefer you can also get the printed pattern plus the required yarn to make the blanket.
Just a quick update about our new Stylecraft yarn packs. Buying the yarn in packs is more cost effective, making each ball just £1.75. Today is the first day of autumn, the weather is certainly feeling cooler and it has just started raining on my nearly dry washing. We have added some new yarn packs onto the site this week that have a halloween and autumnal feel to them.
This pack was inspired by the famous coffee drink, lots of warm spicy colours and muted browns.
Christmas Tree Blanket
We have decided to make the Christmas Tree blanket into a pattern, it is now available on Ali Crafts website, ravelry and Etsy. You can also purchase the printed pattern with the yarn needed to make the blanket.
At the beginning of August I had an idea for a Christmas blanket. I wanted to create something that was fun and a little bit different 🙂 I love Christmas and making Christmas themed projects so I had the idea to make a Christmas tree shaped blanket made up of different coloured green squares. I wasn’t really sure how it would turn out but I am so pleased with the finished result.
I started making the squares using oddments of greens we had left over from other projects. The Stylecraft Special DK range has many greens to chose from. I chose a square design from the Stockton squares pattern.
Layout and chosen colours
I have had many people asking which colours I have used. The star on the top of the tree is Stylecraft Special DK in mustard.
The main tree is made up of the following greens;
I used Lipstick and Claret for the pompoms but you really could use any colours you like. The border is a simple DC all the way around using Khaki.
Pom pom maker – I really struggle to make pom poms so I decided to get a pompom maker as when I make them they fall apart. This made making pom poms so much quicker and easier, I think I still need a bit more practice as some of them look a little squashy.
We are getting back into the school routine now, Mam and I had a day together this week working on some website problems and changes. We have lots of new patterns listed on Ali Crafts Designs website if you like PDF download versions of patterns. Love this scarf pattern made using Stylecraft head over heels….
I have made it to the end of the school holidays 🙂 It has gone quickly but has had its challenges. I have managed to do some crocheting. Housework has been the priority this week, we are working on a much needed garage sort out and tidy up. I am looking forward to spending some days with Ali Crafts next week to do some planning for the blogs and our next projects.
Many Many Green Squares – Crochet wise I am still crocheting the green squares, about 7 left to go but it is taking me along time. I can’t wait to start joining them together.
Flower Frenzy – I thought I would have a little change from the green squares so I decided to try and crochet some flowers using Stylecraft Candy Swirls. I am using this pattern, Flower Frenzy. I am not sure what I will make with them but I thought it would be great crocheting practice.
Merry Christmas Tree Kits – We are feeling a bit festive at Wool to your door 🙂 We have a small number of mini yarn kits to make your own Christmas cards, these include pattern, card, envelope, yarn and a button for £3.50. These would make super teacher thank you cards.
We are nearing the end of the school holidays now, 1 week to go 🙂 I currently have a husband with a broken arm, 10 year old gaming fan who is glued to his gaming chair and 7 year old who has autism so that has meant we haven’t done too much over the holidays. My husband works from home so it has been quite hard balancing everything. I think we are all ready to get back into school/work routine.
Wool to your door news – I created a new yarn pack this week that includes two of the new Stylecraft special DK colours.
This is a six ball yarn pack at £10.50 which means you are getting each ball for £1.75. The colours are;
I think the colours work really nicely together and hope to use them in my next project. This yarn pack is called Rose garden.
What am I working on? – Squares squares squares 🙂 I have a slightly crazy idea for a blanket, so far I have made 17 squares for the blanket but I need 22 more. I am really enjoying it though and managing to fit some crocheting time even with the endless requests for food from the boys. We are going through an alarming amount of crisps during the holidays!!
I am using a crocheted square pattern from the Stockton Squares blanket pattern which is currently on sale (only £1.80). Once I have finished the squares I am planning a deep border using lots of different greens.
Ali Crafts Designs SALE – There is currently a sale over at Ali Crafts designs, initially it was just for the Bank Holiday Weekend but we have decided to extend the sale until the 1st September 2017. Why not grab yourself a bargain PDF download pattern…if you prefer printed patterns we sell them here at Wool to your door.
Hope everyone has a great week. Don’t forgot to give us a follow on Instagram – the link is the right hand side bar or search for “wool to your door”.
Three new Stylecraft special DK have been released this week, Lincoln, Blush and Lapis. I love the wide range of colours already available in Stylecraft special DK, and there really is a colour for every project. Now we have three extra ones to chose from!
Spider Shawl – I managed to finish crocheting Ali Crafts Spider shawl this week. I have never made a shawl before but found the pattern so easy to follow. The tweedy yarn is soft and lovely to use so the shawl grew quickly and didn’t take me long to crochet even though it’s the school holidays.
I have been inspired by the new Lincoln colour and I am making a new blanket made up of some of the different coloured Stylecraft greens. I have a rough plan of how the blanket is going to turn out but it is going to be quite different. Fingers crossed everything goes to plan.
RSPB Saltholme and Hardwick Park
The weather has been a little better this week so we have managed to get the boys out for a few walks. It has been a busy week but only two weeks left of the school holidays now.
